We’ll maintain this site as a living memorial to North Woods

The NC Department of Transportation, “in partnership with” Chatham Park Investors and Pittsboro, have proposed to build a road through the North Woods Neighborhood.

Our mission is to save North Woods neighborhood from destruction and to set a strong precedent for the protection of other Pittsboro and Chatham county communities for years to come.

In 2011, Pittsboro approved the concept of a North-South bypass road that would take truck traffic around the eastern side of Pittsboro. Importantly, the alignment approved by Pittsboro ran along the North Woods eastern property line, where the neighborhood borders Chatham Park land. Ten years later, in January 2021, NCDOT announced its proposal to build North Chatham Park Way “in partnership with” Chatham Park Investors through North Woods, thus dooming a 40-year-old neighborhood.

We asked, how did this happen? What changed?

After exhaustive research of the public record covering the last 10 years, we have found a subtle but determined campaign by Chatham Park Investors and Kimley-Horn, their engineering consultant, to influence NCDOT to shift the road into North Woods and away from land owned by Chatham Park. In fact, we found that the alignment proposed by NCDOT in 2021 was first drafted by Chatham Park in 2015, three years before NCDOT started working on the road.

As a neighborhood, we are standing up and speaking up. Pittsboro Commissioners have jumped in with support and have directed NCDOT to evaluate an alignment to the east that spares North Woods.

This situation is active and fluid. We urge the Pittsboro and Chatham County community to stay alert and help us send a strong message.

This is WRONG. It is wrong for a developer to position NCDOT to use eminent domain to take land from private citizens for the benefit of rich developers.

Importantly, this is not just about the North Woods neighborhood, it’s about all of us and how Chatham Park will treat its neighbors, now and in the future.

Ready to take the next step?

This is a campaign to save this community and future potential victims of Chatham Park’s encroachment. We have a variety of different things you can do to help, and if you have just a minute or two, we’d love to have you on our team.
